Updates to Vehicle Standards Instructions

Vehicle Standards Instruction (VSI) documents provide guidance and advice for enforcement officers, approved inspection stations, accredited persons, bus operators and vehicle owners on a range of vehicle standards.

In response to customer enquiries and to better meet the needs of our stakeholders, Vehicle Standards is releasing two new VSIs (L32 and L33) and amending our current VSI on the use of heavy vehicle modification codes on light vehicles (G12.5) to provide additional information.

You can find the new information on the Vehicle Standards Instructions webpage which provides details on:

Use of heavy vehicle modification codes on light vehicles (G12.5)
This VSI details vehicle categories and codes permitted to be used to certify modifications on eligible light vehicles. T1 (Construction of tow trucks) and T2 (Design of tow trucks) are now included.

ESC testing on in-service light vehicles (L32.0)
The purpose of this VSI is to clarify the assessment options that may be used to validate the continued operation of an ESC system fitted to a light vehicle that has been subjected to a modification. A list of acceptable evidence that the ESC continues to operate as intended is contained within the VSI. Note the inclusion of FMVSS 126 as acceptable where applicable within the code.

Modifying wheel track difference (L33.0)
This new VSI will clarify TMR’s position on the interpretation on the LS section of VSB-14. Where a manufacturer has designed a significant difference between front and rear wheel track, this VSI will allow Approved Person engineers to utilise the LB2 code to ensure that the resulting modified vehicle still meets the intent of VSB-14, by commonising front and rear wheel track.
