Up-skilling advice now available to older Australian workers

Older workers aged between 45 and 70 have the opportunity to access advice and guidance on upskilling and finding new career pathways thanks to the Federal Government’s Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers Program (Skills Checkpoint Program) initiative.

Through the $17.4 million Skills Checkpoint Program, 20,000 current or recently unemployed older Australians will be supported over the next four years as they transition into new roles within their current field or identify new career options.

Program participants will work closely with career advisors to identify skill strengths and past work experience that may assist the transition to a new field or career opportunity. Career advisors will also develop a personalised career plan to assist participants identify education and training options that may enhance future employability.

To be eligible for the Skills Checkpoint Program, individuals must be Australian citizens or permanent residents aged between 45 and 70 and either currently employed or recently unemployed (within three months) and not registered for assistance through an Australian Government employment services program.

Participants may be eligible for a co-contribution of up to $2,200 (GST inclusive) from the Australian Government through the Skills and Training Incentive to fund re-skilling or up-skilling opportunities.

The Skills Checkpoint Program provides employers with an opportunity to help older employees re-skill or up-skill, which may be necessary given the continued disruption of COVID-19 that continues to impact business operations.
