Toyota reveals production form 2023 Toyota bZ4X electric SUV

Toyota has announced the details of its upcoming bZ4X battery-electric SUV, due for Australia following an overseas launch in mid-2022.

Following the unveiling of the concept in China earlier this year, the production bZ4X will be the first mass-produced EV from the brand.

The vehicle will be based on a new e-TNGA modular battery-electric platform. Two variants will be offered – front or all-wheel drive.

Front-wheel-drive models will produce 150kW and 265Nm from a single electric motor, while all-wheel-drive examples will feature 80kW electric motors (one on each axle) to develop 160kW/336Nm combined.

Top speeds for both models are 160km/h with a 0-100km/h sprint in just 8.4 and 77 seconds for front and all-wheel drive versions respectively.

A 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery is said to deliver approximately 500 kilometres of driving range in the front-wheel-drive model, or 460km with an all-wheel drive. These figures have been estimated according to Japan’s WLTC test cycle.

The vehicle can be charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes using a DC fast charging at 150kW. This is joined by a 6.6kW AC onboard charging at launch, or 11kW three-phase AC capability in the last quarter of 2022.

Externally, the production version doesn’t vary significantly from the concept shown in April. The Toyota bZ4X measures 4690mm long, 1860mm wide and 1650mm high, riding on a 2850mm wheelbase.

Internally, the vehicle features a circa-12-inch infotainment touch screen in the centre of the dashboard, a 7.0-inch digital instrument display, digital key functionality and a panoramic sunroof.

A yoke-shaped wheel will be initially offered exclusively to the Chinese market, with all other regions to stick with a circular steering wheel at launch.

The vehicle will also possess a full suite of driver assistance systems, incorporating new long-range radar and camera units, upgraded autonomous emergency braking with intersection support, and remote parking technology.

The vehicle will go on sale across various overseas markets from mid-2022. Although an Australian launch has been locked in, timing is yet to be confirmed.
