Toyota leads market as industry sales exceed 900,000 for 2020

Toyota dealers sold more than 200,000 vehicles in 2020, leading the industry to a better-expected sales result of 916,968 for the calendar year.

Toyota’s overall tally of 204,801 customer deliveries came within just 0.5 per cent of its total from the previous year, despite the economic challenges presented by COVID-19.

Toyota was crowned the top-selling brand for the 24th time, including the past 18 years in a row – and the top seller across every state and territory.

The brand also claimed the title of top-selling vehicle in every major category – overall (HiLux), passenger car (Corolla), sports-utility vehicle (RAV4) and light-commercial vehicle (HiLux).

With a total of 45,176 sales, the HiLux was Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the fifth year in a row, and Australia’s most popular commercial vehicle for the 23rd year straight.

Toyota’s Corolla was ranked the best-selling passenger car for the 8th year in a row with 25,882 sales. Stablemate Camry has now been the most popular mid-size car for 27 consecutive years.

The RAV4 was the country’s top-selling SUV with a record of 38,537 sales, as well as Australia’s most popular Hybrid.

Electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for more than five per cent of the annual national market for the first time, propelled by 54,335 Toyota hybrid sales. Hybrid sales were almost double that of 2019, a positive sign for the EV market.

Other Toyota vehicles that led their segments included the LandCruiser Prado, LandCruiser Wagon, Coaster, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

As at December 2020, the brand claimed an incredible 22.3 per cent share of the market, their strongest result since 2008 – a rise of 3.0 points.

Matthew Callachor, Toyota Australia President and CEO, said both industry and Toyota results were remarkable and expects the market to improve in 2021.

“Toyota will continue to bring new models to Australian customers this year, including a new-generation Kluger, GR high-performance sports cars, an upgraded Camry and, for fleet customers, an all-new Mirai fuel-cell electric sedan,” Mr Callachor said.
