Toyota HiLux Raises the bar with new sales record

After posting the highest annual tally of any vehicle for the past decade, the Toyota HiLux has well and truly surpassed its previous sales record.

Preliminary figures for 2018 show the Toyota HiLux exceeded 50,000 sales for the first time, a previous record of 47,093 set in 2017. The last vehicle to top the 50,000 mark was Holden’s Commodore in 2008, with 51,093 sales.

Toyota attributes the HiLux’s sales growth to the arrival of three top-end models, the Rogue, Rugged and Rugged X in conjunction with steep discounts on its former flagship, the HiLux SR5.

In the end, the HiLux clocked up its 21st year as Australia’s top selling commercial vehicle but it was also the top-selling car nationally.

2018 marks the third year in a row the HiLux has has been named Australia’s top-selling vehicle, finishing 2018 ahead of the Ford Ranger ute. Unsurprisingly, the favourable Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 and Hyundai i30 rounded out the top five in 2018.

The Corolla ranked third overall in 2018 and was the top selling passenger car for the sixth year in a row with the Camry named 2018’s the top-selling mid-sized sedan.

A report to be released by The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries will indicate 2018 was the 22nd time Toyota has led the Australian car market, marking a 16 year consecutive winning steak.
