Seat Belt malfunction leads to Toyota Prius recall

Toyota Australia has issued a recall notice for 2015-2019 Prius and Prius V model vehicles due to an issue relating to the seat belt reminder system.

Over time, the driver’s side seat belt may suffer abnormal wear at the contact point. This wear can lead to residue being deposited on the reminder switch which in turn can lead to a circuit shortage between the contact points.

As a result, the seat belt reminder will remain on even when the seat belt is securely fastened, with no way of turning the reminder off.

687 Prius and 350 Prius V vehicles are included in the recall, with Toyota offering a free inspection and repair of the driver’s seat belt buckle.

Toyota Australia will contact all affected owners via SMS, email and/or mail to their last address to schedule a date and time to bring their vehicle in to their preferred dealer for repair.

Meanwhile, Subaru have also issued a recall notice due to a separate seat belt issue affecting 721 MY19 Impreza and XV models.

A manufacturing defect has been detected that causes the locking mechanism in the rear seat belts to potentially malfunction in the event of an accident. This defect has the potential to lead to increased risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Owners of affected vehicles are currently being contacted by Subaru Australia to arrange a free inspection and repair at their preferred dealer.

For more information, owners are being asked to contact their preferred Subaru dealership.
