Q1 New Motorcycle Sales Figures Announced

Sales of motorcycles, scooters and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) have gotten off to a sluggish start in 2022, with the Australian market recording a 10.7 per cent decrease across the first three months.

A total of 24,338 motorcycles, scooters and OHVs were recorded as sold for the quarter according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), led by the road motorcycles segment, which actually recorded a sales increase of 12 per cent as 9,723 units were sold.

Amid ongoing concerns around the cost of living and new car delivery delays, FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber urged Governments to come together to make it easier for road users to transition to motorcycles.

“Motorcycles, scooters and OHVs are a crucial element in the lives of many Australians, be it on the road or for recreation,” said Weber.

“In a period of rising fuel costs and increased congestion, now is the time for States and Territories to implement nationally consistent licensing regulations for motorcycles and scooters. Enabling more motorists to move to motorcycles and scooters is a key tool in helping to lower the cost of living and reducing the amount of time road users spend in traffic.”

Sales of off-road motorcycles recorded a decline of 17.2 per cent with 9,644 units sold, while 1,696 scooters were sold (a 15 per cent decline).

The OHV segment recorded the steepest drop-off, with just 3,275 units sold, a decline of 40 per cent on Quarter 1 2021’s figures.
