Nominate your local hero to receive the first of Queensland’s new number plate series

The Queensland Government is asking Queenslanders to nominate their local community heroes to receive the very first issue of the state’s new number plate series due to be released later this year.

The new series of plates, which will begin circulation from September, will feature a combination of three numbers followed by two letters and another number, moving away from the current three number, three letter format.

With the new series of number plates set to bring a fresh, unique look to Queensland’s number plates, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey has announced that the very first plate in the series would be awarded to a local Queensland community hero.

“The new series of number plates will be a format unique to Queensland so we’re inviting the community to nominate their local heroes to receive the very first number plate: 000-AA0,” said Mr Bailey.

On top of the historic number plate, the chosen recipient will also receive a $500 gift card as part of the reward.

Four additional heroes shortlisted will receive $250 gift cards.

Mr Bailey has encouraged Queenslanders to nominate a local hero who has provided significant contributions to the community, with an emphasis on those who’s contributions had come in the way of making Queensland roads safer.

“A local hero could be someone who volunteers at a driver reviver site or drives the bus for the local community or sporting club.

“There are people in our community who go about their business quietly every day to help others around them.

“They’re the type of heroes we should recognise, the people who embody the spirit of community and help define what it means.”

The new number plate series comes following the exhaustion of the existing series, which have been in circulation since 1977, and is the first change to Queensland number plates since a colour change from green text to maroon was decided on in 2001.

It is predicted that the new series will provide new number plate combinations to drivers for the next 25 years, with the number at the end of the new series to progress back through the letters (e.g. 123-A2A).

Nominations for the local hero competition are open now until Sunday, 9 August.
