Mitsubishi recalls nearly 2,000 Outlander vehicles over seat belt fault

A recall for 1,948 vehicles has been issued by Mitsubishi Australia, after the popular Outlander SUV model was found to possess an incorrectly assembled seat belt anchor.

According to the notice lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the recall relates to the seat belt installed on the right rear seat of the plug-in hybrid and standard petrol versions of the vehicle manufactured between 31 July 2019 and 31 March 2020.

A component designed for seat belts on the left side of the car was found to be mistakenly fitted into the right rear seatbelt.

In the event of an accident, this fault may cause the occupant in the right rear seat to be improperly restrained, increasing the risk of injury.

Mitsubishi Australia has stated that no incidents have been recorded relating to the improperly fitted seatbelt.

All affected vehicle owners are being contacted by Mitsubishi Australia to organise an inspection and replacement of the faulty component. According to a spokesperson from Mitsubishi Australia, this replacement involves a ‘simple click-out-click-in procedure’.
