Jump in EV Sales

From 2011 (49) to 2017 (2,284), the Australia market has seen approximately 7,341 Electric Vehicles (EVs) sold in total.

In comparison, New Zealand had 6,207 EVs sold (only 1,134 less than Australia) by the end of 2017 – most of them used imports, while Australia’s sales are nearly all new EVs.

However, recent figures show fully electric vehicle sales have picked up.

This June, Australia bought 123 all-electric vehicles – nearly double the 65 sold in the same month the previous year.

Hybrid sales have also improved with roughly 1,344 hybrid vehicles sold in June 2018, a total of 189 more than June 2017’s figure of 1,155.

For June 2018, about 670 fully electric vehicles ended up in private and business ownership (203 and 467 respectively). That compares with 200 private buyers and 349 ABN buyers in 2017.

A Government report forecasts EV sales comprising half of new car purchases by 2030, and 100% by 2040.

It assumes new luxury car tax and fringe benefits tax exemptions, the removal of import restrictions on second-hand EVs, government procurement of EVs, and a range of state and local government incentives will have an impact.

EV sales under that scenario are expected to rise from about 3000 annually to more than 70,000 annually during the next five years.

Energy minister Josh Frydenberg has been reported as saying an EV “revolution” would see one million of them on the road by 2030.
