FCAI releases 2020 motorcycle sales figures

New figures released from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show motorcycle sales totalling 108,926 units for the 2020 calendar year, an increase of 22.1 per cent from 2019 (89,199).

Off-highway vehicles (OHV’s) recorded significant sales growth, with 24,856 units sold, an impressive 38.8 per cent increase from the previous year.

Off-road motorcycles also experienced strong growth, with 44,697 vehicles sold, an increase of 30.3 per cent.

In addition, road bikes demonstrated an increase in sales, with 34,912 units sold, a 9.2 per cent increase.

Scooters were the only segment to record a downturn, with sales totalling 4,461, a decrease of 11 per cent.

FCAI Chief Executive Officer, Tony Weber, said the increased sales were welcomed by the industry.

“Given the difficult market conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is reassuring to see segments of the market continuing to perform well,” Weber reports.

“The rise in popularity of personal transport in this segment demonstrates that OHVs, off-road motorcycles and road bikes were a preferred option for many recreational and commuting activities during the year.

Off-road motorcycles claimed the highest share of the market (41 per cent), followed by road bikes (32.1 per cent), off-highway vehicles (22.8 per cent) and Scooters (4.1 per cent).
