Electric Car Subscription Service Launches in Queensland

Energy provider AGL and car subscription service Carbar have expanded their subscription service to Brisbane, offering Queensland customers the opportunity to experience the benefits of an electric vehicle (EV) without committing to ownership.

The expansion to Brisbane follows the successful pilot trial in Sydney and Melbourne, where the company recorded strong interest and uptake.

AGL Executive General Manager Future Business and Technology, John Chambers, said he was excited to bring the service to Brisbane.

“Queensland is home to the world’s longest electric superhighway, which means EV drivers can travel with ease from Cairns to Coolangatta,” Chambers said.

“Our customers are a driving force in our path to a cleaner energy future and we’re excited to be expanding to Brisbane as EVs grow in popularity across the country.”

“We want to help customers navigate the shift to an electric vehicle and this service provides the flexibility to do so with the ability to swap, upgrade or cancel at any time.”

“We are confident Brisbane drivers are eager to embrace the new service, with more than 300 expressions of interest in our first 90 days, across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.”

“As part of AGL’s Climate Statement commitments, we want to help to make these vehicles a viable option for our customers – EVs are no longer a pipe dream for Australian families and subscription is a real alternative to ownership.”

The company has also expanded the range of EVs, the most recent addition being the MG eZS,  Australia’s “newest and most affordable electric vehicle.”

“The new MG will complement AGL’s existing range of leading brands like Tesla and Nissan, with users getting access to registration, insurance, tyres, roadside assistance, installation of an EV charger and carbon neutral credits as part of the subscription,” AGL said.

AGL Next will deliver the EV subscription service, which AGL describes as its “home of innovation, piloting new programs, technologies and partnerships across energy, telecommunications and beyond.”

AGL has also partnered with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency on an $8.25 million EV charging trial, with the goal of commercializing different charging technologies.
