21 May 2019 – There are new mandatory text requirements for ‘warranties against defects’ when supplying services, or when supplying goods with services in addition to pre-existing mandatory text for the supply of goods. From 9 June 2019, businesses providing warranties against defects to consumers in relation to the supply of services will be required to include the mandatory wording in the warranty.

The Australian Labor Party has promised to re-ignite Australia’s mostly-extinct automotive manufacturing industry. The Party has pledged $57 million to support the nation in playing a significant role in the future production of electric vehicles. The Party clarified the role of Australia in the future of manufacturing, by not suggesting that assembly lines from former production plants would re-start, but more that the country’s future opportunities lay in the development of EV transport, such as trucks, buses and trains.

Labor claimed that Australia has research, manufacturing and assembly capacity for electric buses, trucks, and rail, and also for alternative fuels like hydrogen. The Party stated that as part of the transport industry of the future, our industrial capability and world-class tertiary institutions, would be able to support an electric vehicle commercial industry.

The basis of Labor’s strategy is a $57 million investment into R&D and manufacturing of electric transport. This would be broken into $30 million for EV and mobility development, $25m for research into developing parts locally, and benefits for people involved in EV production.

The strategy also extended to batteries and charging infrastructure, promising $2m for a new Sodium-ion battery plant in Geelong. Australia is already producing two die-cast aluminium parts for the Nissan Leaf, being made in Dandenong South in Victoria.
