Toyota invests in Uber for self-driving cars

Toyota has teamed up with Uber to build self-driving cars for its ride-hailing service.

The partnership has arisen after Uber’s efforts to do it alone were derailed by allegations of theft and a fatal collision.

Announced late August, Toyota is also investing $US500 million in Uber as part of the agreement.

“The deal is the first of its kind for Uber and signals our commitment to bringing world-class technologies to the Uber network,” said CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

The statement said the “mass-produced autonomous vehicles” would be owned and operated by “mutually agreed-upon third-party autonomous fleet operators.”
