Hyundai Launches Ioniq 6 Into Local Market

This is the Ioniq 6, the sleek, all-electric ‘Streamliner’ that is the second model in Hyundai’s Ioniq range.

The mid-size IONIQ 6 is the first sedan built on the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), and there is plenty to like, including its unusual but aerodynamic styling.

The Ioniq 6 model range will be offered in three trims – Dynamiq, Techniq, and Epiq – with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive powertrains matched to a 77.4kWh battery across the range.

Hyundai says the Dynamic grade offers the longest driving range; Techniq grade brings additional power, all-wheel drive, and an array of extra features; while Epiq is the ‘ultimate grade’ and features all the goodies and cutting-edge technology.

The entry-level Dynamic has rear-wheel drive and features a 168kW, 350Nm rear electric motor and that 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery, which Hyundai claims will provide a range of 614km in this package. That driving range is helped along by the very slippery aerodynamics, with the Ioniq 6 offering a low 0.21 drag co-efficient.

The all-wheel drive Ioniq 6 Techniq and Epic models feature an HTRAC all-wheel drive (AWD) system comprising a 74kW, 255Nm front motor and a 165kW, 350Nm rear motor. With the same 77.4kWh battery as the Dynamiq, the AWD variants have a range of 519km.

All models share an 800V electrical architecture, which the company says offers the capability for rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 18 minutes.

Hyundai says the Ioniq 6 is the most advanced Hyundai ever, and it features Bluelink connected car services with an expanded suite of EV.

Enhanced SmartSense driver assistance and advanced active safety suite and an Intelligent Front-lighting System are also available. The driver assistance and safety features list is long, and includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blin Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Driver Attention Warning, – Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Lane Following Assist, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance, Rear Occupant Alert, Smart Cruise Control, 3D Surround View Monitor, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and more.

Inside, the cabin space features integrated Digital Side Mirrors, interactive ambient lighting and eco-friendly sustainable materials, and there’s a heap of tech on tap. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch multimedia navigation unit, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, a head-up display, and plenty more.

“We are thrilled to introduce our first-ever IONIQ 6 as the latest addition to our IONIQ range,” said Ted Lee, Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer in a statement.

“IONIQ 6’s 800V EV architecture is just the beginning of the advanced technology, which also includes expanded SmartSense and Bluelink suites, and the capability for Over-The-Air system updates.

“IONIQ 6 showcases the Hyundai brand’s technological ambition and our commitment to developing sustainable mobility solutions, while giving customers an exciting, accessible and versatile EV,” he said.

Pricing for the Ioniq 6 range will see the Dynamiq come in at $74,000, the Techniq at $83,500, and the Epiq at $88,00, with all prices excluding on-road costs.
