Lexus has taken another step towards electrifying its model range, unveiling the RZ 450e SUV.

It is the second all-electric SUV for Lexus following the recent arrival of the smaller UX 300e, but the first to be built on dedicated electric vehicle (EV) architecture.

Sitting upon the e-TNGA platform, the RZ 450e shares its foundation with the Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra. In this arrangement, the battery pack is mounted under the vehicle floor, contributing to a lower centre of gravity and optimal weight distribution.

High capacity lithium-ion batteries, Lexus-first silicon carbide elements in the inverters, and the incorporation of low-loss technologies deliver an estimated single-charge cruising range of 400km.

A new DIRECT4 system takes the Lexus Driving Signature to an even higher level – using a front and rear e-axle, each equipped with a high-torque electric motor, transaxle, and inverter in a compact unit. The system uses acceleration, cornering speed and steering-angle information to automatically adjust front-rear torque delivery and braking force to all four wheels.

Complementing the RZ’s performance identity, the vehicle’s athletic design and BEV-unique features convey a new visual identity.

The distinct BEV silhouette starts with a low nose and moves smoothly towards the cabin, featuring a rearward peak that contributes to ample rear-seat headroom. Figures show the RZ is similar in size to Lexus RX large SUV, measuring 4,805mm in length, 1,895mm in width, and 1,635mm in height.

The RZ 450e retains the futuristic style seen in the concept car, with the signature spindle grille being replaced by a BEV spindle body.

Turning inside, the vehicle presents a “minimalist yet airy and luxurious environment, exuding a sense of refinement, high-quality craftsmanship, and functional essence.”

The dashboard is dominated by Lexus’ latest infotainment system – as introduced on the latest generation of NX. It incorporates a 14″ touchscreen display with built-in navigation alongside Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The accompanying phone app will also allow owners to pre-condition the cabin, check on the vehicle’s location and get it to flash the hazard lights for assistance in locating the car in a busy car park.

The system comes with the Formula One-style ‘yoke’ steering wheel seen in the pre-production model. However, unlike Tesla’s ‘yoke’ steering wheel which requires the same turns lock-to-lock as a conventional steering wheel, Lexus promises fewer turns thanks to steer-by-wire technology, which should help to deliver sharper reflexes and provide for easier manoeuvering.

Other novel features in the cabin include a powered dimmable panoramic sunroof that can easily and quickly switch from transparent to opaque, an electronic ‘e-latch’ system to operate the doors, as well as heated seats and steering wheel.

“The Lexus Electrified vision aims to deliver driving exhilaration by providing and expanding a portfolio of hybrid, BEV, and PHEV vehicles that exceeds the needs and expectations of a more diverse set of luxury buyers,” Lexus comments.

“The portfolio expansion will see Lexus contributing to the realisation of a carbon-neutral society by offering a full lineup of BEVs in all categories by 2030.”

Final specifications and pricing will be announced ahead of launch in 2023.

Lexus Australia is yet to confirm if the vehicle will be sold locally.
