Hyundai Motor Company has recalled a total of 9,952 vehicles from its Kona (Model Year 2018-2020) and Veloster (MY 2019) ranges for potentially defective piston rings in the engine.

According to the recall notice issued by the Australian Government, the “piston rings assembled in engines may be defective, which can cause damage to the piston rings and cylinder bore and impact engine performance.”

The notice continues stating: “a damaged engine may result in the vehicle stalling and/or engine oil leaking. This increases the risk of an accident and/or vehicle fire causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users or damage to property.”

Hyundai will be contacting affected consumers to organise an inspection and repair, free of charge.

Until the repairs are carried out, owners of affected vehicles are advised to pay attention to any abnormal knocking noise from the engine. If such noise is heard, owners are advised not to drive the vehicle and contact their nearest Hyundai dealer.
