As the original Renault 5 nears its 50th anniversary, the French marque has taken to the Munich Motor Show to debut its new electric hatchback ahead of a 2024 launch.

Unveiled back in January, the new Renault 5 is a reinterpretation of the 1972 original, albeit given a modern EV twist.

The front headlights are modelled to the original design, while there’s a front-mounted EV charging port located where the radiator grille was once placed.

“The design of the Renault 5 Prototype is based on the R5, a cult model of our heritage,” said Renault Design Cheif, Gilles Vidal.

“This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive.”

The revived nameplate will be part of a major new plan to revive the French firm’s fortunes and will sit on the Renault Group’s new CMF-BEV platform for small electric cars.

The company has confirmed the Renault 5 will use new powertrain technology, as well as nickel,  manganese and cobalt-based (NMC) batteries that the company claims will reduce the cost per kWh. The vehicle will have a claimed driving range of around 400km.

The prototype will be just one of 14 new models – including seven fully electric vehicles – that the brand intends to launch by 2025. It was shown alongside the new Megane E-Tech, which uses the larger CMF-EV platform, and a new version of the Renault 4 Supermini, called the 4ever.
