Honda Updates High-Performance Civic Type R

Honda has introduced a significant mid-life update to its Civic Type R.

The new version includes upgrades to ride and handling, braking performance and engine cooling; freshened exterior and interior design elements; plus the first performance data-logging application in a Honda vehicle.

The suspension has been upgraded for more responsive and sharper handling with Honda claiming the control software for the Adaptive Damper System (ADS) now able to evaluate road conditions 10 times faster, resulting in improved damper reactions for better response and ride quality.

Suspension upgrades are also designed for improvements in lateral loads and cornering characteristics, and sharper steering feel for better control.

An upgraded braking system includes new two-piece floating front brake discs and new brake pads with a more fade-resistant pad material.

Engine cooling performance has been improved by a new larger grille and thinner grille beam, which delivers a 13 per cent larger air intake opening.

There’s also an updated radiator core for better coolant temperature in high-demand driving situations.

Styling and design tweaks see the Type R receive body-coloured blades featuring on the updated rear bumper design, and a new paint colour called Racing Blue. On the inside, a new Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and a new shift lever with teardrop-style knob partner up with a revised 7-inch Advanced Display Audio touchscreen with integrated ventilation system controls.

Also new is the addition of Active Sound Control (ASC), which works to enhance the engine sound during aggressive driving in Sport and +R modes, while refining it further in Comfort mode.

Debuting for the first time is a new vehicle performance datalogger. Known as Honda LogR, the new system combines the Type R’s onboard computer and sensors with a smartphone app to help drivers monitor and record a variety of performance parameters. It features three main functions: a Performance Monitor, a Log Mode and an Auto Score Mode. While driving, all interaction with Honda LogR is through the Display Audio screen.

Under the bonnet, the Type R retains the 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine, which produces 228 kW of power at 6500 rpm and 400 Nm peak torque from 2500-4500 rpm. This is paired to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching function.

The new Honda Civic Type R was officially released at the end of 2020. Price is $54,990.
