FCAI releases November new car sales figures

New car sales have declined for the 20th straight month according to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

New car sales for November reached 84,708, a 9.8 percent drop from the same figure 12 months ago.

This brings the total yearly new car sales to 978,628, 8.2 percent less than 2018’s total, and puts 2019 on track for the worst yearly result since 2011.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber believes that despite numerous incentives becoming available, the current climate does not appear to support new car sales.

“The industry has been looking for a lift for some time now and has activated multiple levers to achieve some stimulation, including incentives, sales and special vehicle editions. However, the appetite for new vehicles remains suppressed,” said Weber.

“On the bright side, there has never been a better time to purchase a new vehicle. Now, with the holiday season upon us, is a great time to act!”

The Toyota HiLux was once again the top selling vehicle for the month, with 3,687 sales (down 21.1 percent). However, right on the Hilux’s heels is the Ford Ranger, which recorded 3,491 sales (up 0.6 percent) and recorded more sales in the 4×4 segment than the Toyota. The Mitsubishi Triton finished third with 3,123 sales (up 29.9 percent) to continue its strong performance in 2019.

Toyota’s RAV4 and Camry were big winners in the month of November, with the RAV4 selling 2,316 units (up 19.6 percent) to finish fifth highest selling model for the month, while the Camry outdid their November 2018 sales results by 54.5 percent, selling 2,001 units to finish seventh. The Kia Cerato also recorded a strong month of growth, increasing sales by 21.3 percent to sell 1,639 units and scrape into the top ten models.

In the battle for top brand, Toyota continued its HiLux led dominance, selling 16,954 vehicles (down 7.2 percent). Mitsubishi was the big mover in November, taking out second place with 6,861 sales despite a 1.3 percent decline.

Mazda suffered a 30.7 percent decline, selling 6,167 vehicles to finish fourth behind Hyundai (6,821 units, down 13.3 percent), while Kia continued to buck trends, recording a 10.7 percent increase in sales to sell 5,141 vehicles and finish fifth.

Holden continued its slide, recording its worst monthly sales result of all time, recording just over half the amount of sales they recorded in November 2018 (2,668).

Hybrid and electric vehicles continued to make inroads into the market. Hybrid vehicles were sold 3,897 times for the month, while Electric vehicles tallied 331 units. This result means almost 5 percent of all vehicles sold in November were hybrid or electric.
