Hyundai recalls 96,000 vehicles over ABS circuit shortage

Hyundai Motor Company are recalling approximately 96,000 model year 2005 – 2011 vehicles after an issue was discovered with the anti-lock break system (ABS) module that was leading to a circuit shortage.

Affected by the recall is 68,765 FD series i30 vehicles built between November 2006 and December 2010, 18,724 HD series Elantra vehicles manufactured between August 2005 and May 2011 and 9,393 Santa Fe model vehicles manufactured from March 2005 – September 2009.

Due to an error during manufacturing, an electronic control board circuit in the ABS module may cause the circuit to short when the components are exposed to moisture. This shortage has the potential to ignite a fire in the engine compartment, even when the vehicle is not running, as the circuit is constantly being powered.

Hyundai are in the process of contacting affected vehicle owners to organise a repair of the circuit board, with replacement parts expected to be made available from July 2020.

In the meantime, Hyundai have cautioned drivers against parking affected vehicles in confined spaces and away from flammable materials, in case a circuit shortage does occur.
